The Nuu-chah-nulth Are A Fishing People

This means that fishing is more than a livelihood: it is a way of life intricately connected to our culture and place.

Generations of Nuu-chah-nulth fishers have lived, fished, and traded from the cool and clean waters of the Pacific Coast. Today, our generations share our skills and bounty with a larger market through the Five Nations Fisheries. The Nuu-chah-nulth Hἀwiiḥ, our hereditary chiefs, have given permission for all seafood to be carefully harvested from their territories by fishers who receive T’aaq-wiihak, which means permission to fish from their hἀwiiḥ. Our fishers meet Canada’s overall objectives for fisheries management, sustainably harvesting all seafood.
