Meet Grant Johnson and Jermy Strongeagle!

Ha’oom Fisheries Society (HFS) is excited to welcome Grant Johnson and Jermy Strongeagle this month to the Ha’oom team as our new Fisheries Data Management Interns!

Grant and Jermy have joined us for a four-month internship, running from September to December 2026, and will be working closely with our science team to strengthen the way we organize, manage, protect, and use fisheries data across HFS.

Supporting Stronger Fisheries Data Management

Fisheries data plays an important role in supporting fisheries management, fisheries science, reporting, planning, and decision-making for the five Nations. Over the course of their internship, Grant and Jeremy will be working with our existing fisheries and registration databases to help improve how information is organized, connected, and maintained.

Their work will include:

  • Reviewing and organizing information within our Registration Database, including information related to fishers, vessels, and registrations;

  • Identifying duplicate, missing, or inconsistent information and helping improve data quality;

  • Supporting the organization and standardization of fisheries data;

  • Reviewing our existing database structures and identifying opportunities to make them more accessible and easier to maintain;

  • Developing improvements to our fisheries data systems so that information can better support HFS staff, the Nations we work with, and fisheries management activities.

This work will help build stronger systems for managing fisheries information and create clearer processes that can be maintained and improved over time.

Meet Grant

Grant Johnson was born in Prince Rupert and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is Tsimshian, originating from Port Simpson near Prince Rupert. Grant brings a background in environmental monitoring, data organization, and community program support. He gained experience through ECO Fox, where he facilitated youth activities and handled office administration, managing staff schedules and organizing records in Excel, as well as a practicum with Ethos Lab, where he managed and promoted their digital community platforms. Grant is excited to apply his data management and ecological skills to support the team’s fisheries research.

Meet Jermy

Weyt-kp, Jermy Strongeagle is a member of the Simpcw First Nations. He is interested in technology and loves working with computers; this complements his passion for art, which has moved from traditional media to digital. The FNTC Technology Foundations course has given him the opportunity to learn about marketing, GIS mapping and web development. He looks forward to gaining experience during his time with Ha’oom Fisheries Society.
