Meet Our Fisheries Coordinators - Kadin Snook and Olivia Currie
Most of you already know Kadin Snook and Olivia Currie as our two Fisheries Coordinators at Ha’oom. But have you ever wondered what they do exactly? What are their responsibilities, and how do they support the five Nations’ fisheries?
Well, we’re here to spill all the secrets!
Kadin and Olivia are the backbone of fisheries operations. While they don’t make any decisions about how the fisheries are managed—those decisions always come from the five Nations—they carry out the day-to-day work needed to implement the Nations’ direction on it. Their job is to make sure the fisheries run smoothly on the ground and on the water!
Here’s what they do:
Meeting with the Five Nations
They regularly meet with the five Nations’ fisheries managers to receive instructions and updates, and to stay aligned with each Nation’s goals and approaches.
Meeting with DFO
They meet with DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) to share information, ask questions, and ensure the Nations’ directions are followed.
Drafting Fisheries Notices
Once each Nation makes decisions about a fishery—like when it should open or who can participate—Olivia, Kadin and our Communication Department draft the official Fisheries Notices to communicate those decisions to fishers and DFO.
Replacing the FMP with the CBEF
Olivia and Kadin are helping the five Nations move away from the old DFO Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) frameworkand put in place the new Community-Based Economic Fishery (CBEF)—a process that better reflects the values and priorities of the five Nations.
Coordinating Logistics
They make sure the logistics of each fishery are in place—from setting up contracts with Ecotrust for monitoring, to making sure fish landings go smoothly.
Organizing Fishers’ Meetings
They organize pre-season and post-season meetings in each community to share updates, gather feedback, and report on the season. They also help set up regular fishers’ meetings so everyone stays informed.
Reporting to the Board
Olivia and Kadin keep the Ha’oom Board of Directors in the loop with monthly reports about how the fisheries are being implemented and what’s coming next.
Crab and Prawn Applications
They help coordinate the crab and prawn fisheries—receiving applications from fishers, submitting them to the Board for selection, and working with successful applicants to prepare for the fishery.
Acquisition Plans & Proposals
They help draft plans to acquire new fishing licences and put together proposals to support new fisheries infrastructure—like the recent work to acquire a packer to support the fisheries.
Answering Fishers’ Questions
Got a question about when the fishery opens? What the rules are? Where to deliver your catch? Olivia and Kadin are your go-to people. They respond to fishers’ questions and make sure everyone has clear and up-to-date information
